In the month of March 2014, Mukul Madhav Foundation & Finolex Industries Limited collaborated with Healing Little Hearts (HLH), a registered charity in the UK and Grant Medical Foundation’s Ruby Hall Clinic to bring in specialist medical teams from the UK to Pune (on a quarterly basis), to stand-in and guide their in-house doctors, whilst they perform life-saving heart operations on babies and children, especially new born or underweight children.
This team is headed by UK based Indian origin consultant paediatric intensivist, Dr. Sanjiv Nichani. His team of cardiac specialists includes surgeons, intensivists, perfusionists and PICU and NICU nurses, who are skilled in post-operative care.
The team visited Ruby Hall from 20th-27th September, 2014 to conduct complex heart operations on minors. Previously, the team could only guide the cardiac surgeons at Ruby Hall but this time the Maharashtra Medical Council, India gave the team permission to operate on the patients. Besides operating, Dr. Nichani’s team of nurses also trains the nurses at Ruby Hall in postoperative care.
This time around 10 children were operated between the ages 2 months – 8 years, the smallest baby weighing only 3.7kgs. As of today, 3 patients have been discharged and the remaining are stable and in recovery and will be discharged soon.
