India’s largest rigid PVC–U pipes and fittings manufacturer and the second largest PVC resin manufacturer, Finolex Pipes, with Mukul Madhav Foundation, in association with Ashok Leyland, the country’s second largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles, along with Bicycle Angels, a not-for-profit social initiative that provides ‘livelihood’ bicycles, organized a Cyclothon from Pune to Ratnagiri from 18th November 2014 to 22nd November 2014.
This project was an initiative of Mukul Madhav Foundation and was sponsored by Finolex Pipes as a part of their CSR activities and Ashok Leyland as the travel sponsor for the same.
Two professional cyclists, Mr. Rakesh Bakshi of Bicycle Angels and Prof. Ram Dhillon (renowned ENT surgeon from UK), along with Mukul Madhav Foundation, successfully completed this journey.
The 340km stretch saw the Foundation donating cycles to the deserving and health camps for the children of Zilla Parishad Schools at Shirwal, Umbraj, Kokrud, Pali and Mukul Madhav Foundation’s Mukul Madhav Vidyalaya at Golap, Ratnagiri. 30 doctors participated in the medical camp, which included the Paediatric team from K.E.M. Hospital, the Audiology & Speech and Dental team from Bharati Hospital, and an ENT team from Sassoon Hospital, Pune and Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai. Approximately 2500 children were screened by the doctors.
The Cyclothon commenced on the 17th of November ’14, with a donation of a tri-cycle to a specially abled individual from Bal Kalyan Sanstha, Pune and a bicycle to a sex trafficking survivor, who is currently employed by a jewellery making micro enterprise.
Bicycle Angel’s founder, film maker and author of “The Director’s Diaries”, Rakesh Bakshi, has donated over 93 bikes and 3 wheelchairs in Mumbai. “When we look at a daily wage worker on a bicycle, we don’t understand how important that bicycle is to his life. A milkman or someone that sells eggs or tea from the back of his cycle depends on it for their survival and livelihood”, he says.
Prof. Ram Dhillon is a successful ENT specialist from the UK. Associated with Mukul Madhav Foundation for multiple projects, he finds charity bike rides the perfect combination to enjoy his love for cycling and his desire to help the needy. “I like the idea of donating bicycles because it ties in with my idea of giving people a leg up. After that, it is up to them to do what they need to further fulfil their aspirations”, he says.
Ms. Ritu Chhabria, Managing Trustee of MMF, elaborated on the reason for this initiative by saying, “The Cyclothon is an initiative that will become a calendar event and the overwhelming response that we have received has led us to believe that this is an event that will only grow from scale to scale each year.”
The vision behind this project was to empower the underprivileged by helping them better their chances at earning a livelihood with the help of the cycles donated. In total, 9 cycles were donated to deserving individuals who were verified by Finolex Pipes’ local dealers.
