Maya's Journey Through Loss, HIV, and the Support Sustaining her Family
2nd July 2026

How much can one person carry? Every morning, Maya sees to it that her husband is fed. He can no longer see and no longer has the hands to care for himself. She then leaves for a thread factory in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where she earns ₹7,000 a month. ₹3,000 goes to rent. ₹500 to their child’s school fees. The rest is stretched impossibly thin across food, medicines, and the daily needs of a family that has already lost so much.
In 2025, while working on a private electrical job, Mahesh suffered a severe electric shock that cost him one hand, three fingers of the other, and his eyesight. During his treatment, he tested HIV positive. Maya was subsequently diagnosed as well. Their child is HIV negative, but fear for the future lives with them constantly. Mahesh’s disabilities prevent him from completing his Aadhaar KYC, meant for the NGO for the disabled and the NGO for the handicapped. With no external support and no safety net, the entire burden of the household, in every sense of the word, had come to rest on her alone — a story not unlike that of countless empowering rural women across India quietly holding their families together.
While searching for someone who could help with their need for financial help for medical treatment, Maya, during visits to ARTC Jaipur at SMS Government Hospital, heard about Mukul Madhav Foundation (MMF), a healthcare NGO in India working as an NGO for healthcare and an NGO for women empowerment, providing donations for food and ration support to HIV-positive women in need. Through MMF’s Care and Support Centre (CSC), she began receiving monthly ration assistance. For a family that had stopped expecting much from anyone, it was an unexpected act of sustained care. Our team worked to understand not just the diagnosis but also the daily life behind it and ensured that support reached her consistently, month after month.
