Planning for the Long Term
7th Jan 2026

In Gavasad village, Meenaben Kanubhai Rohit always seems to have a demanding schedule. She had five cows and three buffaloes to manage. So, her days were shaped by feeding schedules, cleaning, and the constant attention livestock requires. Milk income supported her household, so this was never an option. However, like many small dairy farmers in India, she knew how uncertainty could arise when animal health or breeding did not go as expected.
MMF’s volunteers arrived with support through a rural development effort. The focus was clear and practical. Meenaben’s animals were enrolled for artificial insemination in cattle. Trained workers visited her regularly to perform procedures and monitor her progress. The animal artificial insemination services covered all eight animals, and each resulted in a successful pregnancy. For Meenaben, this was reassuring. It didn’t feel new; it felt organised.
Alongside the visits, she participated in training sessions led by these experts. They explained breeding and feeding. There were also discussions about management and health care as connected parts of the system. Understanding the artificial insemination process in cattle helped her see why timing and preparation mattered. Breeding was not a waiting game. Now, it has become something she can plan with clearer expectations.
As the pregnancies progressed and milk production improved. This brought considerable relief to her household management. The work was still hard, no doubt. But her attention to daily care made her animals healthier. So outcomes were more predictable. Meenaben supports sustainable livestock farming because it leads to better breeding, thereby reducing strain on animals. And the improved management supported their long-term health.
Meenaben did not describe her experience as a transformation. She spoke instead about clarity. Knowing what to expect from her animals. She understands why specific steps mattered and how planning months ahead makes a meaningful difference.
