Hope on Her Shoulder

How far would you go to keep your family afloat when everything falls apart? For two decades, Surendra Malik, a 50-year-old plumber from Sasan village in Pattamundai Block, Kendrapara District, Odisha, worked tirelessly in Hyderabad to provide a better future for his wife and three children. His life was one of dignity, built on the strength of daily labour and sacrifice. But in 2019, a workplace accident changed everything.
Malik was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) after this incident. It is a severe and progressive lung condition that robbed him of his ability to work. The family lost its primary source of income entirely. The hospital bills mounted, and his savings diminished. His wife refused to give up, though, and took on the weight of responsibility for him and the family.
She stepped into the unknown, not fearful of the outcome, but with a resolve to do her best for her loved ones. ActionAid, a women empowerment NGO, was leading a livelihood initiative in collaboration with Mukul Madhav Foundation and Finolex Industries Limited at the time. Our volunteers met her first when she was hoping to get some help with business start up to support herself and her family. The initiative helped her start a small shop in their village. It seemed like a minor win to everyone else. But to her, it was everything. She kept her little booth stocked with supplies and served her neighbours politely. It helped restore a sense of dignity and purpose to a household on the brink of collapse.
Still, the expense of medical care continued to be a significant concern. The treatment was time-consuming and expensive. Mukul Madhav Foundation intervened again. This time, following thorough planning and assessment, we provided his family with monthly medical support to help alleviate their burden. It was not charity; it was a lifeline woven with humanity and compassion. Today, the Malik family is slowly reclaiming stability.
